Ta-Nehisi Coates: The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood
A heartbreaking work of staggering...Oh, wait...
At least that woman isn't prejudiced or nothing.

This is interesting, and it almost seems like there's some belated realignment going on. These Appalachian Democrats seem extremely similar to the type of people who, in the South, switched over to the Republican Party since the 1960s, mostly because of cultural issues. But in a reverse WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KANSAS thing, these people actually have historically voted in their economic interest and it's one of the last strongly unionized area of the country, hence the staunch Democrat thing.
Whatever is happening though, it's a pretty sickening display. Someone wake these people up and tell them what year it is.

I think it's interesting how woman from the older couple projected Obama's unity message onto Clinton in order to justify their vote. In a way, it was easier to watch the old lady, who was at least honest about her racism (though she warn't prejudiced, of course). That can be confronted more directly than the mental contortions of those trying to convince themselves they aren't racist.

My girlfriend forwards me all these horrible emails that she receives from her grandmother. The emails are those slanderous "Why doesn't he wear the pin", "He was raised a Muslim", "Jeremiah Wright hates white folks and Obama loves Jeremiah Wright" types; it's awful, to read the thinly-veiled racism (the subtle jabs, the sentences written to sound like they were written by Jeremiah Wright that are written in what the writer no doubt believed was "black speak"). It's doubly awful to see an entire state filled with people who believe those emails.

Yea, the usual. It's America people. They act the way they do and wonder why a negro may just be a bit jaded about the possibilities of America.
