To stimulate the left and right brain...

28 Jul 2008 07:13 pm

I had this long, overwrought post announcing what the rest of you apparently already know--that I'm going to be blogging for the Atlantic--and then it got eaten by Typepad. It was quite wry and humorous. Oh well. I'm just going to say thanks to those who've been posting here from jump (Shani, Breuk etc.) and also how sad I am that Matt won't be fighting in the trenches with me. For what we do, in our way of thinking, there really isn't anyone better than Matt. Anyway, I know I'm not the most reliable lefty, and a lot of you have beef with me from time to time. But I do try to shoot straight guys. It's really all I know how to do. And now I'm just going to do what I should have done five sentences ago--hand the mic over to Outkast.

Huh. Maybe I should actually renew my subscription. I'm pretty upset with their non-Matt bloggers at the moment. Fallows is good, but he's still in the blogger feeling out stage. Not the multiple quick hit style I prefer. Your piece on Cosby was one of the best I've seen in it in a while. I was pleasantly surprised to see your blog linked to by multiple people whose blogs I read not a week after reading the piece.

I just discovered your blog in time for you to move. Oh, well. How does the Atlantic keep scoring these great writers?

Ta-Nehisi, Congratulations! You have earned it - and I look forward to seeing more of your print articles in the Atlantic.

Hey, congrats, Ta-Nehisi! HU folk doing big things get a huge thumbs-up from me. Can't wait to see what you'll come up with. And as for the crazy commenters that come with a bigger place... Well, I got your back. :-)

Well, I for one beg to differ that Matt is the best of the liberal bloggers. Certainly, he has a coherent point of view, and one that even makes sense to this libertarian, and I also appreciate that he's willing to criticize Democrats.

But as someone who considers herself neither Democrat nor Republican, his incessant Republican-bashing gets a little old. I mean, point out John McCain's flaws by all means, but the fifth or sixth time rehashing the same issue gets a little old...

Congratulations Ta-Nehisi. I look forward to keep reading you. Will this blog disappear? Do you start as soon as Matt leaves?

Congratulations and keep up the straight shooting.

Congratulations! I don't usually comment here, but I started reading this blog after someone forwarded me that excellent Cosby article.

I'm not liberal, but for what it's worth, I really enjoy your blogging and I hope writing for a major media outlet doesn't change your style. Just don't get intimidated by all those credentialed bastards.

Congrats!

I hope you won't take it personally if I say I hope they also hire a more devoted liberal to replace Matt. Their blogs already skew embarrassingly to the right -- whatever McArdle imagines she believes.

Congratulations, man!
Just put up the URL when you have it, and I'll read every post!

Kudos!

Do people like me who started posting here 2 months before you hit the big time get extra street cred in the new, crowded comments section?

Congrats. Looks like I followed you from there back here, only to have to turn around ;-)

"But I do try to shoot straight guys."

I've been reading you for a while and didn't realize you were a militant homosexual. Or did you mean...

"But I do try to shoot straight, guys."

I don't usually play grammar police, but I thought it was a funny typo. Congrats on the move!

Not only did you earn this, the Atlantic would have been making a huge mistake if they didn't take you on. Congratulations!

Oh congratulations. I found your blog in the first place when you guest blogged there this spring and I followed you home. This is excellent news.

As you surely know, there was a great outpouring of Ta-Nehisi love in Matt's comments section after he announced he was going to CAP. You were the consensus pick of his readers.

This is great for you, even better news for The Atlantic.

Loved you on bhtv too. A Coates-Glenn Loury pairing would be fascinating IMO.

FWIW...

Agree with whomever said the rest of the Atlantic "Voices" have disappointed of late. Andrew Sullivan is one of our great public intellectuals, a quality that rarely comes through on his blog. I like Douthat, but we're lucky to get a post every other day, and he can become quite opaque and pedantic (though not nearly as boringly so as his co-author Reihan Salam). I've long been a Fallows fan but I don't much care about the Beijing air quality or the latest hand-held gizmo. Ambinder's fine, if it's real-time campaign play-by-play you're looking for. I haven't read enough Megan to judge.

Oh well, guess I gotta change my link. You know how to keep it movin' Bison. Good luck.

Best wishes on your new endeavor. I'm glad to see that you'll now share your talent with the world from a larger platform.

Does that mean that this blog is going to shuttered?

Best,

HR

congratulations. all the best with that.

Yay! So glad they did hire you full-time. I loved the Cosby piece and started reading a whole bunch of your stuff after that, and I think you are indeed a very straight-shooting and level-headed writer. Congrats, and I look forward to reading more of your work in the Atlantic!

Congrats from another reader that came here from your temporary stint at the Atlantic. They made a great choice.

"But I do try to shoot straight guys."

That's really not very impressive. We're slow moving because we don't go to the gym enough.

This is great news, congratulations. However, I think it’s incumbent that you move back to DC so you can continue Matt’s DC-centric transit blogging. I don’t think Sullivan, McCradle, et. al. are up to the task.

"You try to shoot straight guys"? What happens if your gaydar is faulty and you cap the person of the wrong sexual orientation?

In other words, commas have their uses. (... straight, guys.)

Wow, congrats TNC! What wonderful news!

See you over at the Atlantic. When does that start?

BTW, I didn't find your blog through the Atlantic when you guested over there. I read your Condi Rice article in the Voice awhile ago, loved it + remembered to check if you had a blog once the election cycle started. I actually met you very briefly in Jacksonville at Doug Rand's during the election in 2004, during the GOTV stuff there.

So you know where your blog traffic comes from. :-)

I am also a convert to the Coates blog via the Cosby piece at the Atlantic. I found that to be an incredibly well written article and I tuned into your blog immediately. I think you are more than an adequate replacement for Yglesias, even though I don't classify you as the same type of liberal. I love his posts, but he comes across as smarmy, bitter, and angrily sarcastic a little too much. You are much more of a liberal who has the potential to change people's views on subjects (except for mine, because the right-winger knows your games.) I've got to ask a favor though, I understand as a liberal, you are fighting for that viewpoint, but can we all agree Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit needs to leave. I think that could be a signature piece of yours if you gave it the true Coates treatment. Best of Luck, and I'll follow you to the Atlantic. I can't wait to see the banter between you, Andrew Sullivan, and Ross.

Congrats! Looking forward to it.

Ta-Nehisi, don't mind the haters (which there are only going to be more of in the comments at The Atlantic) and keep shooting straight people! Seriously...

Like B.I.G., I know you've been smooth since days of underoos, and I don't expect anything less when you move to bigger waters.

Good stuff. Congrats!

c'mon, guys. That comma mistake makes him Matt Y.'s heir apparent.

Congrats!

Congrats, best wishes, and all that! I'm sure you'll continue to impress us all. Not to mention make us think like few others.

That was a cool breath of fresh air, my friend.

You guys are hilarious. I'll do my best to keep it honest, and hold it now for my militant gay brethren.

Congratulations! I too followed you here from there and know that my reader has no issues with their feeds, so I'm extra happy. then again, I'm happy whenever you're blogging, even though I never comment to say so.

Dude you are gonna be LAMED down. And I don't know how Sully and McArdle will feel about a negro joining their ranks. Good luck.

I see other people have mentioned the "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" moment, so I'll just say congratulations!

I see other people have mentioned the "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" moment, so I'll just say congratulations!

I started reading this blog when you were substituting for Matt and though I don't comment a lot, I'm really enjoying your writing. I think you're a great catch for The Atlantic.

Congrats! Just don't let them make you out to be The New Voice of the Young, Post-Jesse Jackson Generation of Black Writers. I'd hate to see your independence get used that way.

Hi Ta-Nehisi,

Not sure if you remember me, your old colleague from Vertigo Books, but congrats. I’ve been seeing your name everywhere – the new book, the cover of Atlantic, lots of links to your blog, and now a member of the Atlantic’s. Keep up the good work.

Best,

David

Congrats, dude! Good to see that the Atlantic will be replacing Yglesias with a blogger who needs a copyeditor just as badly.

Seriously, this is much deserved. Congrats again.
